Adventures in Crocheting

Crochet, not to be confused with knitting. Crochet only has one needle (a needle hook), whereas knitting has two. So, I went to my local Michael's and bought everything I would ever need for crocheting, because I assumed it would be simple. I mean, I'm creative, right? I can learn to crochet, I just need to watch some youtube videos or something. SO WRONG!

it took me a couple days to even have the patience to make it fast the first chain. I started out making my headband. I wanted to make a headband, because on pinterest there was this cute headband and it titled "Easy enough, anyone could make this". I'm anyone, I could totally make it. I gave up right away.... I'm telling you guys, I am not the kind of person that likes doing things I'm not good at.

Anyway, I start by making a chain, then I realize halfway through that I was supposed to be counting my chains, already screwed everything up. But I am determined. Then I learned how to go up to the next level. you just turn your material and move the yarn to the other side (terrible description, but I get it now... which is all that matters....)

Then I didn't know how to move on. Do I do more chains? So I looked up easiest stitches in crochet on youtube. I watched a couple videos on Single Stitch. Thank goodness it was pretty easy, It had a couple steps, but about halfway through my row it felt natural. Then I did another row of single stitch... this was taking FOREVER!

So, I looked up double stitch, this had another step each time, but it made the project go twice as fast. I did two more rows with double stitch, and I was done.

Alright, this is going to get kind of wordy, but writing it out helps me understand what all I have done. So, here you go- Watch videos to get the basic steps.

CHAIN INSTRUCTIONS

So, to start a chain you have to make the first loop.

1. Wrap the yarn around your left index finger (clockwise) twice

2. When you get to the top insert that yarn into the existing yarn already around your finger

3. Pull the yarn and pull it through

Then take your needle hook and stick it through the loop you just made.

Next wrap the yarn around your needle back around the right side and hook it in your hook.

Take that piece of yarn and pull it under the first loop.

REPEAT until it is your desired length

SINGLE STITCH INSTRUCTIONS

First, turn your material and chain up.

Then stick your hook into the first chain then wrap the yarn just like you do for a chain and pull it through the stitch.

Then you should have two pieces of yarn on your needle.

Wrap more yarn around the needle and pull that through both pieces of yarn.

Repeat until the end of the chain.

DOUBLE STITCH INSTRUCTIONS

Same start as a single stitch. Turn your material and chain up.

Then you are going to wrap the fabric around the hook and stick the hook into the fourth stitch.

Next,  wrap another piece of yarn around the needle and pull through the stitch.

You should have three pieces of yarn on your needle.

Then, wrap another piece of yarn and pull it through the first two pieces.

Then finally wrap another piece of yarn and pull it through the last two pieces on your needle.

Repeat until the end of the chain.

100 Day Creativity Challenge (Days 92-100)

Okay, So I have a couple extra days in this post, but it's the last post!!!!! 100 DAYS!!!!! I am the coolest! Leading off with #DAY92 with my all time favorite motivational quote! It's seriously amazing, and online it has an extra part, but I didn't think that was appropriate for social media.... For #DAY93 I was sitting around knowing I wanted to do some block letters, but couldn't think of anything to write. Then my hubbers walked in the door and here it is. It was a quick doodle, but he really liked it. So, it's a keeper. Now #DAY94 I made this amazing WHOLE30 approved gumbo with cauliflower rice!!!! It was so amazing, very spicy, but will eat again after the diet..... probably with real rice, but that's okay. PS, don't you just love my parsley garnish??? So artsy. Hahahaha! Recipe here And this is #DAY95. I only have 5 days left.... this is insane. I'm sure all my family and friends are happy it's almost over... Anyway, I p

100 Day Creativity Challenge (Days 15-21)

I realize I am a little delayed on these days, but I don't think I have that DAILY of a following. So I think I'm okay. Anyway, on to Day 15. For Day 15 I decided to break out the calligraphy set my husband gave me two birthdays ago. BEST GIFT EVER! It takes a lot of practice, and you have to go super slow.... not my forte. But once you get going it is amazingly easy. It makes you feel like using a quill back in the day with John Hancock. Or is it Herbie Hancock? The world will never know. #tommyboy Anyway, I was just messing around and writing letters, hope you enjoy my #DAY 15 Next, Day 16 I thought I'd give crocheting another go. I ended up using my entire thing of yarn, and it was only big enough to be a scarf (kind of going for a blanket, but the scarf is cute). I still haven't mastered it, and I need to do more research.... And of course PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE #swanprincess. #DAY16 Day 17, this was a busy day. I went to Denver for

100 Day Creativity Challenge (Days 8-14)

Hey Guys, I'm back- and trying to be even more creative than ever. I love hand lettering, and obviously it is what I think I am good at. But I am determined to be more "creative" in my creativity choices. So, for Day 8 I chose to learn to crochet. Sounds easier said than done, right? Well, you are correct. I was quite terrible. I first started with the chain, pretty easy. A little awkward at first, but then relatively easy. Then I had to move to the next level, that's when it got a little sloppy. But then I ended going up another 4 levels and it got better and better each time. Now I just need to learn something other than a single or double stitch.... What do you think of my #DAY8 ? Alright, moving on to Day 9. I thought I would mix my creativity up a little and make some delicious dessert. When it comes to desserts I usually stick with cookies, brownies, and ice cream. That's usually where I stay, and I enjoy it there- don't get me w
